Obsolete Calibre Very Rare Swiss Vetterli Sniper Model 71 Stutzer 10.4 x 42mm Rimfire Calibre Scharfschützen Rifle with leather sling. Good condition, with excellent bore and full working action. The Stutzer variant of the 1871 rifle was used to equip the Scharfschützen (Sniper) companies of the army. The Stutzers were equipped with a sensitive Stecher - double set trigger - action and featured a slightly shorter barrel (to improve balance and aid accuracy). The Vetterli went into full scale mass production in 1869 and at the time was the most advanced military rifle of its age. Produced by SIG, they were made to the highest standards of engineering and were still in use with the Russians in WWI. Its only real competitor at the time were the American Henry and Winchester designs, but compared to the Vetterli, they were under powered and lacked range. A Swiss Conscript could fire his Vetterli, with its 10mm cartridge at direct fire ranges up to 600 metres and empty its eleven round magazine in twenty five seconds. This was at a time when the British empire would not have a comparable weapon until twenty five years later! A real piece of firearms history. Obsolete Calibre – no licence required.
