.
Obsolete Calibre Merwin and Bray Third Model .42 Cupfire Cartridge Revolver in very good, original condition. Only 9000 of this type were produced from 1856 until the early 1860s. It was one of the many revolver systems designed to work around the Rollin White patent and was, made by Merwin & Bray in several calibres (.28, .30, and .42). This particular example is a nice one in .42 Cupfire, which was the preferred version used in the Civil War. The cupfire system was similar technically to Rimfire, but with the priming compound in the base of the hollow cup at the end of the cartridge case. This allowed it to be loaded from the front of the cylinder, and fired by a hammer striking through a smaller hole in the rear of the cylinder. Obsolete Calibre, no licence required.
