The Smith and Wesson 686 is the stainless steel version of the 586. Otherwise, they are identical in every way. The Smith and Wesson 586 is based on the L Frame, which was introduced in 1980 and was designed to be slightly larger than the classic K Frame, so as to withstand the higher pressure of the modern +P Magnum ammunition. They are in use with police forces all over the world, as well as with private individuals who use them for sport and self-defence. Like all S&W products, the 586 is made to very high standards and the quality is excellent.
