Rare Antique Colt Roots Model 1855 .56 Calibre Revolving Percussion Carbine in good cosmetic, very good mechanical condition. 1856 dated matching serial numbers, colt markings on receiver and cylinder, and strong action. The barrel locking wedge is missing, however. Colt revolving rifles were the first repeating rifles adopted by the U.S. Government, and were in service from 1855 to 1863. The U.S Government purchased 765 Colt revolving carbines and rifles prior to the American Civil War. Many of these were used by the Confederate side. After the war began, the Union purchased approximately 4,500. The weapon performed well in actual combat, seeing action with the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Union forces at The Slaughter Pen while covering the withdrawal of Jon Millers Brigade during the Battle of Murfreesboro and Snodgrass Hill during the Battle of. In the hands of well trained and disciplined troops, who maintained their weapons, the 1855 Carbine did well, but if powder residue was allowed to build up, then chain fires could happen. A very rare gun to find in the UK and a real piece of Colt history. Obsolete Calibre Antique, no licence required.
